Book Review | The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent

The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent is book 1 in the Crowns of Nyaxia series. It is currently available as part of the Kindle Unlimited subscription. Book 2, The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King will be released on April 14th, 2023.

“The adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, Oraya carved her place in a world designed to kill her. Her only chance to become something more than prey is entering the Kejari: a legendary tournament held by the goddess of death herself.”

Wow, just wow. I’m just relieved that I don’t have long until the sequel is released because I am obsessed with this book. The closest thing I can compare it to is the Throne of Glass series paired with a King of Battle of Blood crossed with a gorier version of The Hunger Games written for a more mature audience. Instead of the Fae, it’s vampires who rule the world. They’re vicious, bloodthirsty and ruthless, humans are nothing but livestock and war for the House of Night is slowly brewing.

There’s so much going on. It’s full of action, romance, betrayal and gore. I was second-guessing the intentions of so many characters throughout, and although I did have a few predictions regarding the ending, that didn’t take anything away from its devastating impact. I was completely immersed in the dark and twisted world Broadbent has created. My favourite book of the year so far.
