Book Review | The Bonds That Tie by J. Bree

The Bonds That Tie is a paranormal reverse harem series by J. Bree that I came across via a TikTok video. The video suggested that the books were similar to A Court of Thorns and Roses so I naturally thought the characters were Fae but this is not the case. I suppose they’re slightly similar in the sense that they feature fated mates, however, this is where the similarities end. Not that I was disappointed by this, in fact, I read the first five books in the space of one weekend. They are incredibly addictive.

“After three years on the run, I’m back in a Resistance camp, chained to a chair as the resident monster.
Everything I ran from, all of the villains of my past, they’re all here to take another bite out of me. But this time, I’m not alone.”

When we meet Oleander Fallows, we know very little about her. We know she has been on the run since she was fourteen, that her family died in a car crash and that her ‘Bonds’ are furious at her supposed betrayal. We soon discover her Bonds (i.e. fated mates) process powers that are infamous in their community. The series begins with Broken Bonds which is somewhat of a bully romance with very little spice, however, as Oli’s destiny is fulfilled, as the truth is uncovered and her bonded group comes face to face with the Resistance (a group of gifted fanatics) the passion, the danger and stakes only intensify. This series really does get even better with each book. I couldn’t get the characters out of my head for weeks after reading. I’m still a bit upset the series is now complete.

The series consists of six independently published books currently available on Kindle Unlimited and you can purchase the physical copies HERE. I’m reviewing the series as a whole because I read them in such close succession that I find it difficult to single out the events in each individual book. I think this is partly because they flow so perfectly into one another.

The character development is perfection and I loved how each of her mates (i.e. members of the Draven Bond) has their own individual personality, powers and backstory. Oli is fierce and beautiful and watching her embrace her dark side and connect with each of her bonds was incredibly satisfying. Honestly, the things I would do to have my very own Gryphon in my life.

The spice is intense and amazingly written. As mentioned, The Bonds That Tie is a dark romance series written for an 18+ audience and is perfect for fans of Katee Roberts, Emily McIntire and Sav R. Miller.
