In celebration of Burns Night on the 25th of January, I had the opportunity to sample a selection of award-winning ‘field to fork’ vegetable dishes from Mash Direct. The range includes Burns Bites, Mashed Potato and Mashed Turnip and that quintessential Burns Night favourite, Neeps & Tatties. The best part about these super-convenient dishes is that you simply pop them in the microwave for a few minutes and you’ve got an instant traditional Scottish feast that the whole family will love with minimal fuss and effort.
It wouldn’t be the 25th of January without a supper of haggis, neeps and tatties in our house. Basically, Burns Night is a 219-year-old Scottish tradition celebrating the life and work of poet Robert Burns. The Burns Supper began in 1801 when Burns’ close friends came together to mark the fifth anniversary of his death. Since then, the event has been celebrated the world over with whisky drinking and feasting on Haggis. We basically use it as an opportunity to come together as a family and have a wholesome dinner, a few laughs and a wee dram around the dinner table. It’s nice to have a small event that gives us a moment’s relief from the doom and gloom of the January drizzle.
Anyway, let’s get to the best part – the food! I can’t tell you how happy I was when my postman dropped off a huge PR package full of mash potato. Isn’t that every bloggers’ dream? It’s certainly mine. If you saw the unboxing on my Instagram Stories a few days ago you’ll know I’m not exaggerating. I was kindly sent Mash Direct’s signature dish, their award-winning Mash Potato (RRP. £1.49), Mashed Turnip (RRP. £1.49), Neeps & Tatties (RRP. £2.50) and Burns Bites (RRP. £2.50). All of which are currently available at Co-Op (Scotland), Tesco (Scotland) and Morrisons (Scotland), Spar, Aldi, Lidl and Scotmid.
As creamy as the mash was and as fresh and light as the turnip tasted, the star of the show was definitely the Burns Bites! The bite-sized delicacies are filled with fluffy mash, sweet turnip and hearty haggis and coated in a delicious crispy, golden, gluten-free crumb. They are heavenly. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. It’s safe to say the entire meal was scoffed in minutes. Even my little girl had a bowl full of turnip which she absolutely loved despite the fact she decided to cover her entire face in it.
The best part was that all the hard work was done for me as Mash Direct use high-quality natural ingredients and the vegetables are gently steam cooked immediately after harvesting, guaranteeing an unrivalled freshness of flavour with no compromise on either the nutritional benefits or natural texture of the vegetable. Each dish is low in saturated fat, gluten-free and free from artificial flavourings, preservatives and colourings and no product has a ‘red rating’ for any of its nutritional values. Plus, all packaging is 100% recyclable and Mash Direct assists in restoring farmland and biodiversity to improve the quality of water, air and soil.
These Mash Direct dishes were an absolute hit in our house this weekend. For more information visit mashdirect.com.
