Veganuary is a charity that launched back in 2014 which encourages people to adopt a vegan lifestyle for the month of January. This doesn’t just involve removing animal by-products from your diet, it also means scrutinising the contents of your makeup bag. If you’re not ready to fully adopt a vegan lifestyle quite yet, Veganuary is still the perfect opportunity to take a closer look at vegan-friendly beauty and broaden your understanding of ethical makeup.

Even though brands can be a little shady when it comes to giving clear and concise information with regards to their policies on animal testing and their formulas, introducing ethical makeup into your collection might prove to be easier than you think. I find it surprising how many mainstream brands such as Barry M, Charlotte Tilbury, and Revolution, now have pages dedicated to vegan makeup; even though not all their formulas are free from animal-derived ingredients. Even sites such as Cult Beauty, SpaceNK, Look Fantastic and Beauty Bay have simplified the process by including Vegan Edits.
Vegan makeup is not bland and you don’t have to make any sacrifices when it comes to shade range, colour-payoff or quality. Vegan brands that are notorious for their richly pigmented eyeshadows include Jeffree Star Cosmetics (although I don’t think I’ll be lining his pockets anytime soon if I’m honest) and Sugarpill Cosmetics now available at Beauty Bay. Unicorn Cosmetics has a stunning range of fluffy faux-mink lashes and Spectrum Collection’s range of synthetic make-up brushes are not only beautiful but some of the best I’ve ever purchased. I have both their Pearly Queen Bomb Shell Set and the White Marbleous 12 Piece Set and I can’t recommend them highly enough. If you ever get confused resources such as Cruelty-Free Kitty and Peta are a godsend. For example, just because a brand is cruelty-free, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s vegan but, don’t worry, there’s lots of info available online to keep you right.
