I honestly didn’t get the appeal at first. I mean, why would you want to watch someone clean on Instagram? Who is Mrs Hinch? Why is everyone obsessed all of a sudden? Well, as soon as I watched her first story on Instagram I completely understood the hype. Just a few hours later I’m dissolving dishwater tablets down my drains with the kettle, naming my household appliances, tracking down rare sponges online and demanding my husband drive me to Home Bargains. Mrs Hinch came into my life at exactly the right time. As I write this I am currently 9 days over my due date, bored out of my mind, anxious as hell and have gone into full-on nesting mode. Who would think cleaning would become such a stress reliever?! Over the last few weeks, it’s become incredibly therapeutic.
Not only do I love her bubbly personality and banter, but I also have huge respect for her as a fellow *cringe* influencer (sorry, I hate that word but I couldn’t think of an alternative – thanks baby brain). It’s lovely to see such a humble and genuine person build up such a huge, loyal and, most importantly, real following in such a short period of time. No bots or shady shenanigans required. I’ve watched her account grow from 30k to 450k in what seems like overnight.
“Nesting (noun) the tendency to arrange one’s immediate surroundings to create a place where one feels secure, comfortable, or in control”
Getting ready for your newborn is especially stressful when you have pets and a two-year-old to contend with. Having a clean house has really helped me to feel more in control and less panicky about going into labour and being unprepared for my baby girl’s arrival. Mrs Hinch isn’t a professional cleaner, but she uses cheap products and breaks tasks down into handy to-do lists so you don’t feel like everything’s spiralling out of control. Mrs Hinch has been the ultimate distraction throughout this pregnancy, plus my home has never been this sparkling clean in its existence. So what supplies have I purchased thanks to my new Instagram obsession?:
Dishmatic Powermesh Sponge Scourers – Let’s face it, I’m gutted that I still don’t have one of her infamous ‘Minkeh’ pads in my life, but for now, these have been working an absolute treat. I also managed to pick up the Minky Extra Thick Sponge Wipes and have managed to order the Spontex Kitchen Microfibre Cloths (AKA Buddy & Brian – don’t ask) on Amazon.
Pledge Fluffy Duster AKA Dave – I finally tracked down Dave in ASDA after it (he?) was constantly out of stock. Using this is Penny’s favourite way to help mummy out during one of my cleaning sessions.
The Pink Stuff – This just arrived from Amazon but I’ve been using it with an old toothbrush to get rid of all the discolouration and grime from around my showers and bath as they get stained really badly with red hair dye.
Zoflora – Apparently this is an old-school cleaning product that’s been going around for years. I think I’m the only person alive who hadn’t heard of it up until now. Even my grans’ got a bottle under her sink. This is my favourite Mrs Hinch discovery. It’s cheap as chips and the Linen Fresh version smells incredible. I clean my floors with it every single day.
I also picked up the 1001 Carpet Freshener Mouse, CIF Stainless Steel Spray, Astonish Oxy Active Plus, Dr Beckmann Carpet Stain Remover and all the Stardrops products I could find in Home Bargains and B&M. It’s pretty clear that her channel has become my ultimate guilty pleasure during my pregnancy.
