Setting powder has become a staple in my makeup collection. My skin can get quite oily and shiny throughout the day so I’ve always carried a mattifying pressed powder in my handbag but, thanks to the miracle of Youtube, I learned that the best way to set my makeup is with copious amounts of loose powder. It’s the only way to guarantee that my concealer doesn’t crease and my foundation doesn’t slip off my chin and nose throughout the day, even with a setting spray applied on top.
For many, many years I relied solely on the Vichy Dermablend Powder. I still highly recommend it, but recently I have been experimenting with a different combination of products. I still want my makeup to stay in place, however, I’m open to a more slightly dewy, natural look instead of that one-dimensional doll-like matte look. It’s tricky to achieve when you have combination skin but products such as the Essence Fresh & Fit Primer and, more recently, the Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder have convinced me that is achievable with a little bit of patience.
To be completely honest, I had no reason to buy Charlotte’s Genius Magic Powder. I simply wanted it because it was a new release from my favourite brand. I very rarely have any money left to treat myself and one day I popped onto her website and it was available. I had money in my PayPal account and I was weak. Don’t get me wrong, it’s far from money down the drain. The powder is absolutely stunning and I reach for it every day, however, it’s almost identical to the Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder and it is definitely not essential to have both in your collection.
Charlotte’s Genius Magic Powder in 1 Fair is a finely-milled, light-diffusing loose powder that contains ingredients to help blur imperfections, visibly reduce the appearance of dark shadows and boost radiance for mattified, smoother-looking skin. It mattifies your skin without caking it in product or adding any white cast. It’s incredibly lightweight and feels luxurious i.e. more like silk than chalk. It allows the natural beauty of my skin to shine through but still controls any shine and subtly blurs out everything you want it to. It’s like applying a soft filter to your face.
The powder is talc-free and contains “bio-compatible Silky Mica” that’s treated with amino acids to create a brightening-radiance effect, Spherical Silica; a sebum absorber that mattifies and reflects the light for a soft focus effect, Tsubaki Oil; to nourish and soften skin, Squalane; a natural Olive Oil that contributes to your skin’s protective barrier and, finally, natural pigments.
Charlotte’s Genius Magic Powder retails for £33 and is available from CharlotteTilbury.com.
