Our visit to the Butterfly Cafe, Dundee | A Baby-Friendly Cafe

On Friday, we took a trip to Dundee and found ourselves at the Butterfly Cafe (28-32 Commercial Street). Butterfly Cafe prides itself on being a colourful, fun and interactive cafe that allows children and babies to eat, learn and play in a safe and happy environment. Not only is the cafe breastfeeding friendly (they have nursing pillows available for added comfort) there is a dedicated playroom full of toys for your little one to explore!

The cafe was mobbed when we arrived at around 1 pm, but we found a little table at in the far corner which was blocked by buggies, however, a member of staff cleared for us almost immediately without us even asking which was really thoughtful. It’s little touches like this that customers appreciate and make a lasting impression. The atmosphere was really friendly and incredibly noisy but when with you’re dealing with little ones, what do you expect? I liked it because it took the pressure off, there’s nothing worse than dining with babies and toddlers and getting all stressed out that they are making to much noise or being disruptive. We were all in the same boat.

Whilst Ross went to the counter to order a few snacks, Penny and I had fun in the playroom. It was great taking a step back and watching her socialising with the other children. As none of my close friends have babies, I often worry that Penny doesn’t get enough interaction with children her own age but it was lovely to watch her share and babble with the babies her age. There were books, play food, cars, animals, tunnels and a little ball pit.

As for the food, we ordered a large latte, Chai Latte, a huge strawberry meringue drizzled with white chocolate and cream, a slab of rocky road, a cheese and ham brioche roll served with crisps, grapes and a cup of water for Penny. The total came to around £11. The full menu is available here which includes light bites such as freshly prepared ciabattas, salads and scones. The coffee and cakes were absolutely delicious, my latte was velvety smooth and the meringue was so big that it was definitely a two man job!

I’ll definitely be revisiting the Butterfly Cafe. It’s just a stone throw away from the shops, the food was delicious and Penny had a lovely time. I love the fact that she wasn’t constantly strapped into a high-chair the entire time. I’ve never been to anywhere like the Butterfly Cafe before and it was such a fun and comfortable environment that I actually found relaxing in spite of all the hustle and bustle as Penny was happy and well catered too.
