There are a handful of beauty products that I reach for daily that I originally had low expectations of. These include eyeshadow palettes I thought I’d never use, products that nobody talks about or products with price tags so tiny, I never thought they’d be able to compete with my favourite high-end brands. Here’s a rundown of some of my favourite discoveries…
I’ll start with two warm-toned eyeshadows I’d never thought would suit me: Urban Decay Naked Heat (£39.50) and Colourpop ‘Yes, Please!’ ($16). Even though Naked Heat was one of the most talked about palette launches of 2017, I had no intention of purchasing it. Cranberry reds and sunsets oranges look fabulous on Queen NikkieTutorials but I imagined I’d end up looking like I contacted some kind of eye infection. When I was lucky enough to be sent the palette (the most amazing PR package I have ever received), it was love at first swatch. There was no denying how buttery soft and richly pigmented they were. I got playing, built my confidence in using warm-toned shades and now it’s one of my favourite palettes. It also led me to purchase one of the most beautiful and affordable palettes I own, ‘Yes, Please!’ from Colourpop. You can read all about it here. The swatches need to be seen to be believed. If you purchase one thing from Colourpop make sure it’s this palette.
Next up, three incredibly underrated purchases from Wilko of all places. I know it sounds a little extra, but I actually wear two primers. I use the Essence Fresh & Fit Awake Primer (£3.50) on my cheeks and under eye area to brighten my complexion. This was recommended to me by GemmaEct.com and is a dupe for Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow Primer. It illuminates the skin without making it look shiny or greasy. If you treat yourself to one product I mention today – make it this one! I also use a silicone-based blurring primer to help disguise the pores on my nose and smooth over areas were my foundation moves around like on my forehead and chin. The Kiss Light Reflecting Primer (£3) was one of my favourite discoveries of 2017. Finally, from Wilko, the Essence Rock ‘n’ Doll XXXL Crazy Volume Mascara (£2.80) creates a stunning eye-opening effect that rivals a few of my high-end mascaras and is one of the best drugstore mascaras I have ever tried and one of the most affordable. The last product is the Revlon ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows (£6.99). Am I crazy, or does nobody talk about these? There’s nothing particularly groundbreaking about the handful of colours available but, for me, they are key shades in my collection. They are MAC Paint Pot dupes that are perfect if you’re looking for a neutral, quick, fuss-free look that will last all day.
