I’m not sure what my skin has been playing at recently, but it appears to be nostalgic for my greasy, spotty and all round meh teenage years. It started with breakouts down the side of my neck and then worked its way up to my chin and then decided to just randomly flair up across my face. Lovely. I know I should be more consistent with my skincare routine, I try to always have my favourite products at hand, but I do test a lot of random products in the search for perfect skin, and for some reason, my skin has had enough. I know that breakouts are a common problem, no matter what you age, so I’ve put together a post about what I’ve put in place to try and get it under control. I’ll update you in a few weeks to let you know what worked and what didn’t…
Get Cleaning
I am the world’s worse at cleaning my brushes and using a dirty makeup sponge is a great way to transfer bacteria all over your face. I used to actually enjoy it, but now I have Penny it’s just another chore that I generally can’t be bothered with, plus I’m just lazy AF and it’s easier to blame the baby. So I ordered a new pack of my beloved Eco Tools Perfecting Blenders and threw out any sponge I’d had over 3 months and had visible tears. Next up, cleaning my brushes. I’ve always used Simple soap to clean mine but I decided to order the MAC Brush Cleanser (£12.99). I looking forward to it arriving to see if it actually makes any difference. It claims to clean, disinfect and condition brush fibres to make them last longer.
Ask Twitter
I used to have a pile of anti-blemish treatments sitting on my dressing table, but I stupidly thought my skin was over that stage so my stash has severely depleted over the years and I had no idea where to start. I turned to Twitter for advice. One product that popped up time and time again was The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution (£4.20 | 30ml). So like any decent beauty blogger, I popped onto the only site I could find it in stock (Victoria Health) and purchased it immediately… and their foundation. I also asked the ladies over at MrsGloss & the Goss (here), a welcoming and inclusive Facebook group full of lovely individuals who support one other and share beauty and fashion advice, deals, looks and hacks. I joined after Jane from the British Beauty Blogger (here) recommended it during one of her Facebook live chats, which I also highly recommend getting involved with. Other recommend products included the Clinique Anti Blemish Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel (£15.50 | 15ml), Murad Acne Blemish Spot Treatment (£15.50 | 15ml), The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (£5 | 30ml), La Roche-Posay Effclar Duo+ Anti-Blemish Cream (£15 | 40ml) and good old TeaTree Oil and bicarbonate of soda.
Back to Basics
I’m taking a break from trying out any new skincare products for a few weeks and going back to a few of my old favourites; products that my skin is familiar with and generally behaves with. These include my Bee Good Honey & Propolis 2-in-1 Cream Cleanser (£11.50 | 100ml), because I am way too poor to invest in another bottle of my Kiehl’s Cleansing Oil right now, The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution (£6.80 | 240ml) and Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream (£24.50 | 50ml). I will also revert back to using my Effaclar Duo [+] Unifiant Light (£16.50 | 40ml) with a touch of my lightening drops for days I want a lighter base. I have a few products from the new TZone Charcoal & Bamboo Collection which I may dip into at they are formulated with problem skin in mind, but as for anything creamy and rich, my face is currently a no go. I’ll let keep you updated with my progress in a few weeks time. In the meantime, if you have any advice or tips you’d like to share please do so in the comments box below, they are always greatly appreciated.
