I am at that wonderful age where I am starting to notice fine lines on my forehead and under my eyes but continue to suffer from breakouts. I have combination skin with the classic oily t-zone and dry cheek and under eye area. I also have discolouration around my nose and slight spot scaring around the chin area. As a certified skincare fanatic I’ve tried too many lotions, potions and cleansing brushes to count so I was beyond excited to try a new gadget from a US cult beauty brand that is now available in the UK: the PMD Home Microdermabrasion Device*. As with all skincare products I like to thoroughly test them before reporting back to my readers so today’s post is an introduction to the brand and a first look at this revolutionary at-home treatment.
Already loved by celebrities such as Jessica Chastain for its complexion boosting properties, PMD Personal Microderm is finally available nationwide to cater to the growing demand for its high-tech at-home microdermabrasion products in the UK. The PMD Personal Microderm system costs £135 and can be purchased from Harrods and Look Fantastic. The device has been voted ‘Best Beauty Buy’ by Instyle magazine (US edition) for two years running and also outperformed a traditional exfoliation spa facial treatment when tested in a recent episode of The Gadget Show (Channel 5).
The kit comes with the device itself, an adapter with a number of socket attachments, 2 green, blue & grey exfoliating disks, 1 white training disk, 2 caps, a reusable filter and an instructional DVD. I’ve used this product four times, once a week for the past month. Using the device is fairly simple, I use it after my face is cleansed and dry. I then gently pull my skin taut (usually my forehead) and glide the PMD in an upward motion making sure not to pass over the same area more than once. I then use a micellar water and follow with my Antipodes Vanilla Pod Day Cream.
The first time I used the device I followed the steps on the DVD provided and practiced on the back of my hand, arm and neck using the white training disk. I then moved on to the blue disks which are for sensitive skin, as your treatment progresses you can then move onto a higher abrasion strength. The device gently vacuums your face and feels slightly warm but not uncomfortable or sore at all. I expected my skin to be red or even slightly blotchy after my first use but my skin remained perfectly calm.
PMD Personal Microderm uses the same aluminum oxide crystals as found in professional machines, which make up a flat, coarse disc that has a deeply exfoliating effect on the skin. The dead skin cells are instantly removed by the vacuum action of the device, which activates the innate skin healing mechanism that stimulates cell renewal and collagen production in the upper layers of the skin. Using the PMD device on a regular basis is said to reduce the appearance of fine lines, light scarring and wrinkles. It will also improve the overall skin tone by fading uneven pigmentation, sun damage, age spots, and skin blemishes. In addition, microdermabrasion also helps to reduce the formation of acne as it helps to clear out clogged pores and release trapped dirt and oil. Another benefit is the fact that skin care products will be more fully absorbed into the skin, which maximises their effectiveness.
My first impressions of the PMD Microderm Kit are positive. The device is easy to use thanks to the instructional DVD and surprisingly gentle to my skin. My skin looks brighter, clearer and feels softer since using PMD but further testing is definitely needed with regards to my fine lines and discoloration.
