Our Geeky Wedding Vows

Today I’m getting all warm and fuzzy and reminiscing about my wedding day. Even though I don’t have my official photos yet, I thought I’d share our wedding vows. Writing your own wedding vows is a pretty stressful process. It took me months to get it just right. Public speaking is also not my forte, but I was surprised that I actually managed to hold it together and speak loud enough even for the back row to hear. I couldn’t look at Ross when I said them though, I knew that as soon as I looked into his teary eyes I would turn into a blubbering emotional wreck too.

We both wrote these in secret, shared only on our wedding day. It just so happens that we both decided to include hidden quotes from each other’s favourite films and TV shows into our vows. On the day, however, we were both so nervous that neither of us picked up on them. It wasn’t until afterwards in our hotel room that we realised just how much effort we had both put into them and laughed about how well we truly know each other. So 100 points if you can spot our geeky references and where they came from…

“When I say, “I love you” it’s not because I want you or because I can’t have you. It has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try. I’ve seen your kindness and your strength. I’ve seen the best and the worst of you. And I understand with perfect clarity, exact;y what you are. You’re a hell of a woman.

As you know, I’m a geek and being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a licence to proudly emote, on a somewhat childish level,  rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating… and I want to spend the rest of my life being a geek for you.”

“Ross, every time I look into our eyes, and you’re looking back in mine, everything feels not quite normal. Because I feel stronger and weaker at the same time, I feel excited and at the same time terrified. The truth is, I don’t know how to feel, except with you, I know what kind of person I want to be. There is still a part of me today that cannot believe that I’m the one who gets to marry you.

I promise to always be there for you, to listen, to hold your hand and encourage you. I promise to dream with you, go on adventures with you and explore the world with you. I promise to protect you, to grow old with you and do my best to make you smile. I promise to be your best friend, your true love, your family, your everything.”
